Guide: Maintaining Your Lawn Tractor (Ride-On Mower)

MAINTENANCE

How to maintain your ride-on mower (lawn tractor)?

Regular maintenance ensures an optimal cut and safe operation. Follow this guide to protect your parts (deck, engine, belts, tyres) and reduce wear costs.

01

SAFETY BEFORE MAINTENANCE
Engine off, level ground, parking brake engaged.
Disconnect the battery, the power cord or the spark plug lead (suppressor cap).
Gloves/goggles; never slide underneath the machine.
02

LIFTING THE MACHINE SAFELY
WORK FROM THE SIDES
No need for a ramp: a screw-type mower jack (capacity ≈ 200 kg) is enough to lift and lock the rear. Never work underneath the machine.
03

BLADE SHARPENING & BALANCING
1
Remove the blade
Detach it from the support / bearing.
2
Sharpen
Follow the existing angle, without over-sharpening or overheating (a bluish blade = overheated).
3
Balance
Balancing cone or centring mark.
4
Replace if needed
Any bent, holed or cracked blade.
04

CLEANING THE DECK / CUTTING PLATE
1
Scrape
The caked grass with a scraper.
2
Rinse
With a hose to wash away residue, then let dry.
3
Protect
A light coat of anti-corrosion penetrating spray.
05

REGULAR CHECKPOINTS
Belts
Anti-slip spray; replace if cracked, glazed or showing exposed strands.
Grass collector
Ventilation openings clear; rinsed and dried.
Tyres
Rinsed, at the correct pressure; anti-puncture sealant as a preventive measure.
Air filter
Clean it; replace at least once a year.
Spark plug
Brush the electrodes; replace if worn.

06

ENGINE OIL CHANGE
EVERY ~40 H
Drain the oil (when warm) using a kit (funnel, pump/syringe). Collect the used oil and take it to a recycling centre: it is hazardous waste.
07

FUEL DRAINING / STABILISER
BEFORE STORAGE
Drain the fuel to prevent deposits (tank, carburettor, line). Alternative before winter storage: a fuel stabiliser.
08

MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
Safety: engine cold, battery / suppressor cap disconnected.
Safe lifting (mower jack).
Blades sharpened & balanced; replaced if weakened.
Deck scraped, rinsed, protected; belts OK.
Collector clear and dry; tyres clean and at the correct pressure.
Air filter clean/new; spark plug cleaned or replaced.
Oil changed (per schedule); fuel drained or stabilised.
09

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How often should I sharpen the blades?
Depending on use: generally once to several times per season, as soon as the cut becomes less clean.
Does an "anti-slip" spray replace a worn belt?
No: it limits slipping, but a cracked or glazed belt must be replaced.
Can I wash the deck with a pressure washer?
Prefer a moderate jet: high pressure can damage bearings and labels. Dry, then protect.
