How to sharpen
your hedge trimmer blades

Well-sharpened blades guarantee clean cuts, faster work and a longer service life for your hedge trimmer. Follow this step-by-step guide.

01

QUICK ANSWER
Safety: switch off and unplug the tool or remove the battery; wear goggles and gloves.
Clean the cutter bar (brush and soapy water), then dry it.
Sharpen each tooth along the existing bevel (light passes, original angle), then deburr the other face flat.
Lubricate the cutter bar with a suitable product.
Run a no-load test: steady noise, no abnormal heating.
02

WHY SHARPEN
A CLEAN CUT, LESS EFFORT
Dull blades tear branches, tire the user and can weaken the shrub. Regular sharpening ensures a clean, precise cut, reduces effort and protects the machine.
03

SHARPENING METHODS
1
Prepare
Tool powered off, cutter bar held firmly. Clean the teeth.
2
Check the condition
If the teeth are chipped or cracked, replace the hedge trimmer blade.
3
Sharpen with a file or stone
Using a flat file or a sharpening stone, follow the original bevel (light passes, steady pressure).
4
Deburr flat
On the opposite side, 1 to 2 very light passes.
5
Repeat tooth by tooth
Remove only the minimum of material from each tooth.
GRINDER OPTION: WATCH OUT FOR OVERHEATING
With an angle grinder, wear goggles and gloves and fit a suitable grinding disc. Make short passes following the existing angle, without forcing, and take breaks to avoid overheating. Then clean off the metal particles and deburr very lightly if needed.
04

TOOLS REQUIRED
200 mm flat file / stone
To follow the bevel of each tooth.
Grinder + disc (optional)
For fast sharpening, with precautions.
Goggles & gloves
Mandatory protection while sharpening.
Cutter bar lubricant
Light spray made for cutter bars.
05

CARE & LUBRICATION
After sharpening: dust off, wipe clean, then apply a thin film of lubricant on the teeth and between the teeth.
Frequency: sharpen as soon as the cut starts to snag or after heavy work on hardwood.
Best practices: avoid hitting the ground, clean off resin, store dry with the cutter bar protected.
06

WHEN TO REPLACE THE BLADE
BROKEN TEETH OR A CUT THAT STAYS POOR
If the teeth are broken, heavily chipped or the cut remains poor after sharpening, replace the hedge trimmer blade, using the brand, model and length as a reference.
07

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to remove the cutter bar to sharpen it?
Not necessary on most models: in-place sharpening is possible, with the machine powered off and the cutter bar locked. Always follow the manual.
At what angle should I sharpen?
Keep the original angle (the bevel is visible). Do not change the angle: it speeds up wear and can harm the cut.
Which lubricant should I use?
A light lubricating spray or one made for cutter bars works well. Avoid oils that are too thick, as they retain dust.
