Guide : Which tiller blades should you choose ?

PARTS GUIDE

Which tiller tines should you choose?

Tiller tines (rotary tiller/cultivator) come in several profiles depending on the soil work: weeding, hoeing/breaking up or deep tilling. Here is how to choose and maintain them.

01

THE TYPES OF TINES
Weeding tines
Bent shape: weeding, slice through weeds. Routine maintenance, worked soils.
Ploughing tines
Rounded helical profile: turn over soil deeply, incorporate inputs.
Hoeing tines
Rounded and folded: loosen, break up and mix in amendments.

02

HOW TO CHOOSE?
Use
Weeding → weeding tine; deep → ploughing; finishing → hoeing.
Soil
Heavy/clay → robust profile; light/sandy → weeding/hoeing tine.
Dimensions
Length, height, hole spacing, diameter/number/shape of holes, thickness.
Fitting
Left/right orientation depending on rotation; kits often paired L/R.
03

MEASURE CORRECTLY
Length (L): tip to tip, outer side.
Height (H): from the lowest edge up to the line of holes.
Hole spacing: centre to centre of the fixing holes (calliper).
Hole diameter: internal (round), or width/length if elongated.
Orientation: left or right blade depending on the direction of rotation.
04

MAINTAINING YOUR TINES
Check the cutting edge often: blunt = more effort and compacted soil.
Sharpen lightly, keeping the original angle.
Replace any tine that is bent, cracked or heavily worn.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can you mix different types on the same rotor?
It is possible depending on the configuration, but a consistent set is preferable for even work.
How do you tell a « left » from a « right » tine?
Look at the curve/fold relative to the direction of rotation of the tiller.
Sharpen or replace?
Sharpen if the edge is still sound; replace if bent, cracked or heavily worn.
