Guide : How to Maintain Your Brushcutter

MAINTENANCE

How to maintain your brushcutter?

Tall grass, brambles, banks, edges: thorough maintenance improves the cut, prevents the gearhead from overheating and extends the life of wear parts (line, blades, filters, spark plug).

01

WHY MAINTAIN IT?
A CLEAN CUT & A DURABLE MACHINE
At high speed, deposits on the housing, a clogged filter, a worn spark plug or a dull blade cause power loss, overheating and gear wear. Regular maintenance ensures easy starting.
02

SAFETY & PPE
Engine off, stable ground. Petrol: suppressor cap disconnected. Electric: battery removed / cord unplugged.
PPE: goggles/face shield, gloves, ear defenders, non-slip footwear.
03

NYLON LINE OR BLADE?
Line head
SOFT GRASS

Finishing work. Lines ø 1.6–3.0 mm; round = quiet, twisted = clean, square = aggressive.
Blade
BRAMBLES / DENSE

3-4 teeth, flat knife or saw blade. Durable, but extra caution required (kickback).
04

ROUTINE AFTER USE
1
Clean the housing
Non-metal scraper for grass and mud.
2
Rinse gently
While protecting the engine / electrical parts, then dry.
3
Protect
A light coat of penetrating spray on the blade and metal parts.
05

KEY MAINTENANCE POINTS
Nylon line
Store it supple (damp); wind it taut, in even layers.
Air filter
Brush/blow it clean or use soapy water; replace ~every 2 years.
Spark plug
Clean the electrodes, check the gap; replace if worn.
Fuel mix
2-stroke mix per the manual (e.g. 1:50); fresh fuel.
Gearhead
Specific grease; watch for overheating, noise or play.
Blades
Sharpen to the original angle; replace if warped / rusted.
06

ERGONOMICS
HARNESS & ANTI-VIBRATION
Adjust the harness to spread the load (shoulders, wrists); set the handlebar angle to work flat. Anti-vibration mounts in good condition reduce fatigue and protect the drive.
07

WINTER STORAGE
EMPTY THE CIRCUIT
Empty the tank and line, then run the engine until it stalls. Grease the blade and store the engine upright, in a dry place. Battery: partial charge, frost-free.
08

SERVICE INTERVAL TABLE
Interval To do
After ~15 h Clean the air filter; check and top up the gearhead grease.
Once a year Clean the spark plug (gap); check hoses/cables/play; sharpen the blade or replace the line.
Every 2 years Replace the spark plug and the air filter.
Winter storage Drain the fuel (tank + circuit); apply an anti-corrosion coat.
09

QUICK DIAGNOSIS
Line breaks often
Dry/unsuitable line, too long an extension, repeated impacts.
Power loss
Clogged filter, worn spark plug, stale fuel, dull blade.
Head/gearhead overheating
Lack of grease, grass under the housing, speed too high.
Abnormal vibration
Warped blade, uneven winding, tired anti-vibration mounts.
10

MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
Safety: suppressor cap / battery disconnected, PPE worn.
Cleaning: housing cleaned, metal parts protected.
Filter clean, spark plug OK (gap).
Gearhead greased, no play/noise.
Cutting: suitable/hydrated line or sharpened/balanced blade.
Fresh fuel in season; drained for winter storage.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which line diameter should I choose?
≈ 1.6–2.0 mm for fine grass, 2.4–3.0 mm for dense grass; respect the head's maximum diameter.
Line or blade for brambles?
Prefer a blade (3-4 teeth or flat knife): it transfers energy better on woody vegetation.
Which mix for a 2-stroke?
Follow the manufacturer's manual (often 1:50 / 2%), with fresh fuel.
