Guide : How to replace and service the blade spindle/bearing

MAINTENANCE

How to replace and maintain
the blade bearing?

The blade bearing (hub with bearing) holds the blade and ensures smooth rotation by limiting vibration and friction. A worn bearing causes noise, play and uneven cuts. Here is when to replace it, how to change it and how to maintain it.

01

QUICK ANSWER
Abnormal noise or play, uneven cuts: replace the bearing.
Take the opportunity to check the blade and the fasteners.
Choose a bearing compatible with your cutting deck.
02

WHEN TO REPLACE THE BEARING
SYMPTOMS
Metallic rumbling, vibration, axial or radial play, signs of overheating or seizing.
AFTER AN IMPACT
After hitting a stone or a stump, check the bearing and the blade immediately.
PREVENTIVE
When replacing a heavily worn blade or servicing the cutting deck.
03

TOOLS & PARTS
Wrenches and sockets
Suitable bits, an extension to reach the bearing bolts.
Compatible blade bearing
The replacement part suited to your deck.
Blade and fasteners
A new blade if bent or worn, replacement bolts if damaged.
Grease and a cloth
Grease if the bearing is greasable, a clean cloth for cleaning.
04

REPLACING THE BEARING
CAUTION
Never work with the engine running: disconnect the ignition and the battery. Work on stable ground, with the machine chocked, and lock the blade with a wooden wedge before unscrewing.
1
Removing the blade
Lock the blade with a wooden wedge, unscrew the centre bolt and remove the blade.
2
Removing the bearing
Remove the belt if needed, then the bearing bolts and nuts. Replace the fasteners with new ones if they are damaged.
3
Cleaning
Wipe the mounting surface and the inside of the deck: no remaining sand or grass.
4
Fitting the new bearing
Position the new bearing and tighten the bolts in a cross pattern to the manufacturer's torque.
5
Refitting the blade
Refit the blade the right way round, tighten to the recommended torque, then check the play and free rotation.
6
Test run
Run it with no load for a few seconds, then check for any noise, leak or overheating.
05

MAINTAINING THE BEARING
Periodically clean the underside of the deck (caked mud and grass).
Grease only if a grease fitting is present: a small amount of grease as per the manual.
Check play, noise and heat after 5 to 10 min of mowing. Replace if anything is abnormal.
06

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
GLOVES
Cut-resistant gloves when handling the blade.
GOGGLES
Safety goggles against flying dust and debris.
ENGINE OFF
Stable ground, machine chocked. Never work with the engine running.
07

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Should I change the blade at the same time as the bearing?
If the blade is bent or worn, or if it has caused an imbalance, replace it. An unbalanced blade will wear out the new bearing again.
Do all bearings need greasing?
No. Some bearings are sealed and maintenance-free. Grease only if there is a grease fitting, and follow the manufacturer's manual.
