Guide : How to choose a brushcutter head ?

BRUSHCUTTER

How to choose your
brushcutter head

The right cutting head is essential to work fast, cleanly and safely. Depending on the vegetation, the machine's power and the line-feed system you want, some heads are better suited than others.

01

QUICK ANSWER
Grass, finishing, areas near obstacles: line head (manual, semi-auto "tap & go", auto).
Dense brush, brambles: blade/disc or plastic-blade head.
Versatility and quick reloading: pre-cut line head (multi-line).
02

TYPES OF CUTTING HEAD
Line head (nylon)
Ideal for grass and light brush.
Blade / disc head
For thicker, tougher vegetation.
Flail head
Crushes and cuts soft vegetation (specific use).
Plastic-blade head
Effective on tall grass and dense vegetation (pivoting, fixed or double blade).
LINE HEADS: THE VARIANTS
Pre-cut line (multi-line): you insert pre-cut strands. Often an aluminium build that is very durable, accepts large sections and various shapes (square, twisted). From 2 to 16 strands; the more you have, the more powerful the engine needs to be.
Manual line feed: you adjust the line by hand from the spool. Simple, sturdy and economical; requires breaks to set the length.
Semi-automatic ("tap & go"): tapping it on the ground releases line. Practical, fewer interruptions; a line-trimming blade brings the length back to the right size.
Automatic: sets the optimal length on its own through centrifugal force. Very fast, but line consumption is often higher.

HOW TO CHOOSE (CRITERIA)
CRITERION
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Vegetation Grass and finishing: line. Thick and tough: blade, disc or plastic blades.
Machine power The heavier or the more strands the head has, the more torque it needs.
Reloading speed Pre-cut line > semi-auto > manual.
Budget & consumables Automatic heads often use more line.
Comfort & safety Near walls and fences, line is more forgiving than a blade.
04

LINE VS BLADE
LINE
BLADE / DISC
Lighter: less fatigue and easier access to tight spots. Heavier, demands more torque.
Cheaper and low-maintenance. More effective on thick, tough vegetation.
Less risk of damaging walls and fences. Risk of damage and kickback near obstacles.
No sparks on contact with a stone (useful in dry spells). Possible sparks on contact with stone or metal.
Versatile: shapes and diameters suited to every use. Specialised for the type of vegetation to clear.
05

COMPATIBILITY & FITTING
Shaft thread and pitch (often M8 or M10, usually left-hand) and the accessories supplied.
Supported line diameter and shape (for example 2.0 to 3.5 mm; square or twisted).
The number of strands possible for multi-line heads.
Machine compatibility: always check the user manual. Some heads are specific to a brand or model, others are universal and come with adapters.
06

SAFETY & MAINTENANCE
Wear your PPE
Goggles or visor, gloves, hearing protection, suitable trousers.
Rotation direction & speed
Follow the recommended rotation direction and speeds.
Check for wear
Regularly check line wear or the condition of the blades.
Avoid impacts
Avoid repeated impacts against stones and metal; replace damaged parts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I fit a "universal" head on my machine?
Yes, if the thread and adapters match. Check the pitch specified by the manufacturer.
Which line diameter should I choose?
The denser the vegetation, the larger the diameter (and sometimes the line shape). Refer to the compatible ranges of the head.
Does the automatic head use more line?
Often yes: that is the trade-off for automatic adjustment and greater comfort.
Which head for working near a wall?
Prefer line over a blade or disc, to limit damage and kickback.
