Guide : When & how to change your engine oil

MAINTENANCE

When and how to change
the engine oil on your machine

Clean oil lubricates, cools and protects the engine. In practice, change it every 50 to 100 hours or every 6 months (whichever comes first), and check the level before every use.

01

QUICK ANSWER
Mowers and tractors (4-stroke engine): 4-stroke oil (for example SAE 30 or 10W-30).
Chainsaws, brushcutters and hedge trimmers (2-stroke engine): 2-stroke oil (mixed with fuel).
Interval: 50 to 100 h or 6 months, whichever comes first. Check the level before every use.
Always check your model's manual for the exact interval and oil type.
02

WHEN TO CHANGE THE OIL
INTERVAL
Every 50 to 100 h or every 6 months, whichever comes first.
SIGNS OF WEAR
Very dark or smelly oil, a dropping level, high consumption, hard starting.
HEAVY USE
Dust, heat or heavy load: change the oil more often.
03

CHECKING THE OIL LEVEL
1
Switch off
Machine stopped, on level ground. Let it cool down if it has just been running.
2
Locate the dipstick
Find the oil filler cap or dipstick. Wipe it clean before opening.
3
Read the level
Unscrew, wipe the dipstick, reinsert without screwing in (follow your manual), pull it out and read.
4
Adjust
The level must stay between MIN and MAX. Top up with a compatible oil if needed.
5
Close it back up
Screw the cap or dipstick back in properly.
04

CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL
CAUTION
Machine off, spark plug disconnected, engine cold or warm (warm: the oil flows more easily; never hot). Protect the ground and have a drain pan and clean rags ready.
1
Position
On a level surface. Locate the drain plug (under or beside the crankcase) or the extraction tube if there is one.
2
Drain
Position the pan, open the plug and let the oil drain out completely.
3
Close it back up
Clean the plug seat, refit it and tighten to the specified torque.
4
Fill
Pour in the recommended oil (4-stroke SAE 30 or 10W-30; for 2-stroke engines, see 2-stroke oil) up to the mark.
5
Check
Refit the dipstick, run the engine for a few seconds, switch off, wait 1 to 2 min, recheck the level and top up if needed.
RECYCLE USED OIL
Store used oil in a sealed container and take it to a recycling centre. Never pour it down the drain or onto the ground.
05

PROTECTION (PPE)
GLOVES & CLOTHING
Suitable gloves and clothing for handling oil and hot parts.
GOGGLES
Safety goggles in case of oil splashes.
06

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Should I drain the oil hot or cold?
When warm (never hot), the oil flows more easily. When cold it is safer but slower. Safety always comes first.
Which oil for my engine?
4-stroke engines: 4-stroke oil (SAE 30 or 10W-30). 2-stroke tools: 2-stroke oil mixed with fuel. Always refer to the manual.
