Guide : When and how to fertilize your garden ?

GARDEN

When and how
to fertilise the garden

Fertilising rebalances the soil's nutrients (N-P-K) and supports healthy plant growth. Properly dosed and well-timed, it improves vigour, flowering and harvests while limiting deficiencies.

01

QUICK ANSWER
When: at the spring regrowth to stimulate growth, after flowering or harvest to rebuild reserves, and in autumn rather use organic amendments (compost, well-rotted manure).
How: little but regularly (split the applications), water after a solid fertiliser, follow the recommended doses.
With what: organic (soil structure and life) as a base, mineral (fast effect) as a targeted top-up.
02

WHY FERTILISE?
REPLENISH A SOIL THAT IS RUNNING DOWN
Soil becomes depleted over crops and leaching. Fertilising recharges it with nutrients and maintains a biological activity favourable to roots.
03

ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS (N-P-K)
ELEMENT
ROLE
Nitrogen (N) Development of foliage and stems.
Phosphorus (P) Rooting, flowering and fruiting.
Potassium (K) Resilience (stress, diseases) and fruit quality.
04

HOW TO FERTILISE (METHODS)
MINERAL FERTILISERS
Granules or liquids, fast acting. To be dosed precisely, ideal during the season.
ORGANIC INPUTS
Compost, well-rotted manure, shredded residues: improve structure and water retention. Best applied in autumn and late winter.
SLOW RELEASE
Release nutrients gradually: handy for limiting frequent applications.
ADAPT TO THE PLANT
Take the pH and the needs of each plant into account: some prefer more acidic soil, others more alkaline.
05

DOSAGE & FREQUENCY
Follow the label (N-P-K and dose per m² or in litres).
Split applications over the season (vegetable patch, beds, lawn) rather than one large application.
Water after a solid application and avoid fertilising in hot weather.
BEWARE OF EXCESS
Too much fertiliser burns the roots and pollutes soil and groundwater. It is better to under-dose than to over-dose.
06

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Should I test the soil before fertilising?
It is recommended: a simple test (pH, organic matter) helps choose the right product and the right dose.
Organic or mineral fertiliser?
Organic for the base and structure; mineral for a quick boost. You can combine the two.
Can you fertilise in hot weather?
Avoid extreme heat and full sun; prefer early morning or late afternoon and water if needed.
