THE DIFFERENT FILES FOR YOUR CHAIN

Files are essential for sharpening and maintaining your chain. The right choice depends on the tooth type, the chain pitch and the operation (cutter or depth gauge).

01

QUICK ANSWER
Rounded teeth (the most common): round file (diameter linked to the pitch, see table).
Depth gauges (rakers): flat file + gauge tool.
Specific sharpening: half-round, triangular or square depending on the profile.
02

TYPES OF FILES
Round file
The most widely used, for rounded teeth. Choose the diameter according to the pitch.
Flat file
For setting depth gauges and certain square-tooth chains.
Triangular file
For specific cutters / profiles and precise touch-ups.
Half-round file
Versatile: combines round and flat.
Square file
For square-cornered chains / circular saws.

3/8" 4 mm
0.325" 4.8 mm
0.404" 5 to 5.5 mm

HOW TO MEASURE THE CHAIN PITCH?

Measure the distance between 3 consecutive rivets in millimetres, then divide by two.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which file for a 3/8" chain?
According to the table, a 4 mm round file is generally suitable (check your chain's specifications).
How often should I sharpen?
As soon as the cut slows down, produces fine sawdust or wanders. Light, regular sharpening keeps the chain in good shape.
Do I need to set the depth gauges?
Yes, periodically, with a flat file and a gauge, to keep the correct depth of cut.
