Guide : how to replace your machine’s carburettor

ENGINE

HOW TO REPLACE THE CARBURETTOR ON YOUR MACHINE?

The carburettor meters the air/fuel mixture. Wear, tired seals or a faulty setting may call for its replacement. Follow this guide safely.

01

QUICK ANSWER
Stop the machine, let it cool and disconnect the spark plug/battery.
Empty the tank and close the fuel tap if there is one.
Remove the air filter, disconnect the hoses and linkages, then take out the carburettor.
Fit the new carburettor with new seals, then reconnect everything.
Prime, check for leaks, start the engine and adjust the idle/mixture if needed.
02

BEFORE YOU START (SAFETY)
VENTILATED AREA
Outdoors or in a ventilated area, away from any flame or spark.
PPE + CONTAINER
Gloves and goggles; have a container ready for the fuel.
IDENTIFY THE HOSES
Take a photo before removal for correct reassembly.

STEPS TO REPLACE THE CARBURETTOR
1
Make it safe
Machine cold, spark plug disconnected (petrol) / battery removed (electric).
2
Drain the fuel
Close the tap (if fitted) and empty the tank to avoid leaks.
3
Access
Remove the cover and the air filter element.
4
Disconnect
Remove the fuel/return hoses, the throttle control and the choke (note their positions).
5
Removal
Loosen the fixings and remove the carburettor.
6
Preparation
Compare the part numbers; fit new seals if supplied.
7
Reassembly
Position the new carburettor and tighten to a sensible torque. Reconnect the hoses and linkages, then refit the air filter.
8
Priming
Fill the tank and use the primer bulb (if fitted).
9
Starting
Check for any leaks and overall operation.
04

TOOLS REQUIRED
Box spanner and/or socket wrench.
Screwdriver (idle/mixture adjustment depending on the model).
Fine needle for the jets (to clear the passages if needed).
Wire brush (if the old carburettor needs cleaning).
05

AFTER FITTING: ADJUSTMENTS & CHECKS
Idle
adjust so the machine keeps running without driving the head/wheels.
Mixture (L/H)
if the screws are accessible, follow the manufacturer's recommendations (base position then fine-tune).
Test runs
crisp acceleration with no hesitation, no smell of fuel; recheck for any leaks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Diaphragm or float carburettor: any difference for fitting?
The removal/refitting principle is similar. Respect the orientation of the diaphragms/seals (specific gasket kit) and the stacking order.
Should the seals be replaced every time?
Yes, recommended. New seals ensure a tight seal and prevent air leaks.
The machine still stalls after replacement.
Check the air filter, fuel filter, tank breather, condition of the hoses and the idle/mixture setting. Also check the spark plug.
